About Amstelveen

Amstelveen is a municipality located in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. It is a part of the suburban part of Amsterdam and consists of several villages or districts like Amstelveen, Bovenkerk, Westwijk, Groenelaan and Randwijk to name a few. The name of the municipality actually comes from Anstel which is a river found in the area and the word veen which is local for fen or moor. Amstelveen is popular because of so many reasons; one of these is it is the headquarters of KLM as well as numerous attractions and tourist spots in the country. Amstelveen was once a rural village and was never walled. During the early 20th century the village remained isolated and only had livestock and horticulture to depend on as a source of income. Afterwards it has been used as an entryway to Schipol after Fort Schiphol was transformed into a military airport. After World War II Amstelveen has adapted an attractive residential district which was in line with Amsterdam’s housing shortage and the introduction of Amstelveen as a metropolitan area with housing hubs and green and urban areas.
